Omega-3s Help Decrease the Incidence of Gum Disease

Omega-3s Help Decrease the Incidence of Gum DiseaseOmega-3s are one of the best things we can take to better our health.  A recent study shows that supplementing with Omega-3s can even help reduce the risk for gum disease.

Omega-3s are also known as Essential Fatty Acids.  We use them in nearly every cell of our body for structural integrity, transporting things in and out of cells, and to reduce inflammation.  They are called Essential because our body does not make them, so we need to get them from our diet, whether from oily fish, certain plant-foods, or in many cases, supplement form like fish oil.  Omega-3s help protect our brain, heart, eyes, and many other systems in our body.

We understand through research that many disease processes start as a result of inflammation, and gum disease is no different.  A study done at Harvard Medical School published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that people who consumed higher amounts of DHA, a type of omega-3, were at 20% reduced risk of developing periodontitis.  Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition where gum tissues can separate from the teeth, causing an  accumulation of bacteria and potential bone and tooth loss.

The study suggests that taking high amounts of both DHA and EPA, both omega-3s found in fish oil and other omega-3 supplements, can be vital in not only oral health, but your overall health.  There are some considerations for taking fish oil or other omega-3 supplement if you are taking certain medications.

Testimonial

  • "I started to come to Dr. Phil because I have a lot of problems with my neck. When I come, he gives me tremendous relief. I don’t suffer from headaches anymore because he adjusts my neck, which is very, very hard to adjust. He has massage therapists that have also helped me a lot, so I am really, really grateful for Dr. Phill."
